Badlands Ranch Store (Giant Prairie Dog Statue)
The feature event at The Ranch Store is the same as it was fifty years ago – a large prairie dog colony to the north of the store, where one can walk among the dogs and toss them a snack of unsalted peanuts. Standing fortress to the entire colony is, of course, the six-ton Prairie Dog. Just as it was fifty years ago, there is still free admission.

Big Sioux State Recreation Area
Located on the eastern edge of South Dakota, the Big Sioux Recreation Area lies on the banks of the Big Sioux River. Close to the cities of Brandon and Sioux Falls, Big Sioux is popular among campers, canoers, bicyclists, hikers, disc golfers, history buffs and archers. When the snow flies, groups of snowmobilers gather at the enclosed warming house. There are 49 campsites and three cabins. Games, fishing poles and snowshoes can be checked out for day use.

At Big Stone Pumpkin Patch near Big Stone City, offering pick-your-own pumpkins, plus pre-picked pumpkins of all sizes, gourds, specialty pumpkins, Indian Corn, straw bales, and corn shocks. They also have hayrides, a corn maze, a jumping pillow, a corn dig, climbing bales and barrel train rides. In addition to the festivities and offerings, the barn is available for weddings and private events. Experience incredible theatre in a stunning setting. Since 1946, this cultural gem has been producing theatre on the site of a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp. Join for musicals, romance, comedy and drama in the rustic beauty of Custer State Park. Fatima Family Shrine
Alexandria is home to the Fatima Family Shrine honoring the Holy Family. Built in 1987, Father Robert J. Fox developed the outdoor area prayer, mass, and candlelight processions. The shrine is the third Fox had built, having developed other shrines at former parishes in Redfield and Waubay.
Faulkton Murals
The town of Faulkton may be small, but their commitment to the arts is gigantic. So are the two large-scale murals of people and scenes unique to the town. International artists used a grain elevator to create photorealistic portrayals of folks that look like giant residents of the town. On the west side of the Faulk County Museum, two Nigerian artists created “The Last Wild Buffalo Hunt,” a mural depicting the county’s last wild buffalo being hunted by a young man on horseback in 1883.

Flag Mountain Lookout
This summit is a popular one with hikers. There are plenty of reasons why. There are clear views from the start, ending at the summit where you can see Black Elk Peak, Sylvan Peak, Green Mountain, Copper Mountain, Nipple Butte, White Tail Peak, Terry Peak, and Custer Peak. The summit is also home to the Flag Mountain Fire Tower, a 1941 structure. Along the way, don’t’ be surprised to see deer, elk, eagles, marmots and other wildlife.

The Fort Meade Recreation Area, just east of Sturgis, includes the Fort Meade Cavalry Post, the Old Fort Meade Cavalry Museum, the Fort Meade Post Cemetery, and the Centennial Trail. The area includes approximately 6,700 acres of forest and grasslands, and offers options for activities such as biking, hiking, camping, picnicking, wildlife viewing, fishing, and hunting.

The Fort Pierre National Grassland includes approximately 116,000 acres of federal land located south of Fort Pierre, north of Interstate 90, and west of the Lower Brule Indian Reservation. The topography ranges from flat to gently rolling hills with large drainages on the north and west boundaries containing relatively steep slopes and creeks that flow toward the Bad River and the Missouri River. The Ranger District office, located in Fort Pierre, is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Indian Creek Recreation Area

Kranzburg 4th of July Parade
If someone were to pull into Kranzburg on the Fourth of July, they wouldn’t guess that the little town only has 170 residents. Many claim that no town in South Dakota does the holiday better, thanks to Kranzburg’s legendary parade. Floats have been known to dispense hot dogs and beer during the parade, and don’t be surprised if you hear firecrackers, see politicians, and encounter very excited and entertaining clowns. For one day a year, the population of Kranzburg jumps to around 5,000. One visit is all it will take to see why.

Lake Poinsett Recreation Area
One of the largest lakes in the state, Lake Poinsett was named after Joel Poinsett who served as U.S. Secretary of War. He was instrumental in promoting the expedition of Joseph Nicollet and John Fremont who first explored the region in 1838. The party camped on the north side of Lake Poinsett. Today, the lakeshore still provides excellent camping opportunities, as well as many other recreational activities. The park is open year-round for camping, fishing and other recreation opportunities. It’s also home to the Lake Poinsett Visitor Center and Museum, which takes you through details of the lake’s history.

The Heritage Center is a Native American gift shop, cultural center, and fine arts gallery, with one of the most impressive collections of historic and contemporary Native art in the country. It is located on the Red Cloud Indian School campus, a beautiful, one-hour drive southeast of Hot Springs. This fantastic display of culture and history is not to be missed! Admission to The Heritage Center Gift Shop and Gallery is free and is open daily, Memorial Day-Labor Day, and Monday-Friday in the winter. Campus tours are $12 per person or $200 for a group with 14 or more people and are offered Monday-Friday year-round. See the annual Art Show, June-August.

In the 1920s, a Greek man by the name of George Manolis came to Huron, South Dakota, and opened up a grocery store. That same store is still in operation today, now run by his great-great-grandsons. The Mead Museum, located on the north edge of Yankton, provides visitors of all ages an authentic historical experience in a beautiful building. There are 3 floors of exhibits including the fully interactive Children's Transportation Museum, an exhibit that follows the journey of Lewis & Clark, as well as an exhibit about the history of the Yankton State Hospital. Summer 2024 will feature brand new exhibit programs: "Spanning a Century: The Meridian Highway Bridge"; "Homestead Hardships: Surviving Dakota Territory", and 2 exhibits that celebrate the history of the St. John's Lodge Masonic Temple as well as the Yankton Fire Department. "South Dakota in Postcards" continues through the end of September. In addition, the outside Heritage Park, currently being developed, will bring history to life through buildings such as the 1906 Gunderson school house, a Great Northern Railroad Depot, 1870s blacksmith shop and more. For over 140 years, the natural mineral springs at Moccasin Springs have been bubbling from the ground, filtered through a red rock formation and flowing into a moccasin-shaped pool, just as they did in 1881. Once known as The Black Hills Spa and Minnekahta Springs, this historic site has been transformed into a modern spa while preserving its rich heritage. The water, known for its pleasant scent and silky texture, is high in magnesium and calcium, and the spa now offers a variety of services, including yoga, massage therapy, sound balancing, and a 3-in-1 sauna with infrared therapy. With four outdoor pools and plans for a new pool house and larger hot pool in 2022, Moccasin Springs continues to provide a relaxing, rejuvenating experience for all.

Mount Roosevelt / Friendship Tower
Not every friendship gets its own tower, but two Wild West legends made their own tribute rules. A longtime friendship between Seth Bullock and Theodore Roosevelt is immortalized at the Mt. Roosevelt Memorial, also known as “The Friendship Tower.” When Roosevelt died in 1919, Bullock arranged for the erection of the “Friendship Tower” as a memorial to his friend. Bullock died only months after the tower’s dedication, but he had two final requests before his death: He wanted his tombstone to feature only one word (“Pioneer”), and he wanted his grave to be high enough on the hill of Mount Moriah Cemetery to have a clear view of Mount Roosevelt. Visitors can take a short hike to the tower before ascending a few stairs to experience a stunning panoramic view of the Black Hills. Picnic and restroom facilities are available along the way, and educational plates will give you a history of the strong platonic connection Roosevelt once referred to Bullock as “a true Westerner, the finest type of frontiersman.”

Old Fort Meade Museum
Fort Meade was a military post from 1878 until 1944. Originally established to protect miners and settlers traveling in the area, it played a major role in maintaining peace on the western Dakota frontier. Today, the Old Fort Meade Museum, on the grounds of the Veterans Administration Hospital just east of Sturgis, is located in the former commanding officer's headquarters and offers an in-depth history of Fort Meade. Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge is managed as part of the Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The complex is comprised of the 21,498-acre Sand Lake Refuge and the Sand Lake Wetland Management District which consists of 45,742 acres of fee title Waterfowl Production Areas and approximately 700,000 acres of wetland, grassland, and conservation easements. Since its inception, the refuge has been designated as a "Globally Important Bird Area" and a "Wetland of International Importance". The refuge has supported the largest nesting colony of Franklin's gulls in the world (1994), as well as thousands of waterfowl, white pelicans, shorebirds, and other colonial nesting birds. Sand Lake refuge also provides excellent habitat for other resident South Dakota species like ring-necked pheasants and white-tailed deer.

Scrap metal T. rex Sue
The town of Faith is considered dinosaur country. In 1990 in a field 15 miles northwest of town, fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson found one of the most complete and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons in the world. The fossil was named “Sue” after Hendrickson, and a custody battle for the remains ended with the skeleton being purchased by Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History. Faith still calls itself the “T.rex Capital of the World,” celebrating the discovery with sculptor John Lopez’s blue scrap-metal dinosaur made to match the size of Sue and something worth seeing on your next stop along Highway 212.

Shadehill State Recreation Area
Nestled on the shores of Shadehill Reservoir, Shadehill Recreation Area offers opportunities to enjoy land- and water-based activities. The reservoir is one of western South Dakota's few large lakes. The dam, built in 1951 by the Bureau of Reclamation, creates more than 5,000 surface acres of water to enjoy. It’s also home to a monument dedicated to legendary fur trapper and frontiersman Hugh Glass, who survived a grizzly bear attack in the area in 1823.

Sitting Bull & Sakakawea Monuments
The Sitting Bull and Sakakawea Monuments stand in a remote spot near SD Highway 1806, two miles southwest of Mobridge, overlooking the Missouri River. Although there is some contention, many believe this to be the final resting place of Native American spiritual and social leader, Sitting Bull. Sitting Bull's Monument was sculpted by Korczak Ziolkowski, known for Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills. The Sakakawea Monument was created with funds raised by Mobridge school children in the 1920s.

The Spirit of the Circle Monument was created to honor the 1,300-plus people that died on the Crow Creek reservation in South Dakota after a forced relocation. Czech immigrants from Bohemia started arriving in the area, then part of the Dakota Territory, in 1868. The current red brick church was built in 1898, replacing the first church that the parish had quickly outgrown.

The Narrows Historical Interpretive Area
Part of the Lower Brule Tribe’s spectacular homeland, the Narrows is a loop in the Big Bend portion of the Missouri River near Lower Brule. The unique geological feature once allowed steamboat passengers to disembark and stretch their legs while the ship floated the 20 miles around the loop. Today, visitors can drive north of Lower Brule to the Narrows Historical Interpretive Area, where you can see a Lakota tip encampment and an Arikara earth lodge.
